Possible Health Effects

CDA provides clients with lead-based paint inspections, risk assessments, lead hazard screenings, elevated lead blood level (ELB) reports, and clearance sampling utilizing the protocols established by U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Lead-based paint is a major source of lead poisoning for children and can also affect adults. Lead poisoning can cause irreversible brain damage and can impair mental functioning in children. It can retard mental and physical development and reduce attention span. It can also retard fetal development even at extremely low levels of lead. It can cause irritability, poor muscle coordination, and nerve damage to the sense organs and nerves controlling the body in adults. Lead poisoning may also cause problems with reproduction by decreasing sperm counts in men.

To reduce cost and building material damage during lead-based paint inspections, CDA utilizes an X-Ray Fluorescence Spectrum Analyzer (XRF) to test materials for the presence of lead-based paint. This is a non-destructive means of sampling. After the onsite inspection, CDA prepares a comprehensive report detailing the findings to include test results, color, substrate, and tesing location.

Composite soils, dustwipe, and bulk paint samples collected during risk assessment sampling are analyzed by a NVALP accredited laboratory per applicable EPA methods. After the onsite risk assessment, CDA prepares a comprehensive report detailing the findings to include analytical results, testing location, completed HUD forms, applicable interim control option, and/or abatement option.
